XinHao Drilling Rig:What are the precautions for using a core drilling rig?

Core Drilling Rig Usage Precautions: Ensuring Core Quality and Operational Safety Core drilling rigs are mainly used in geological exploration and mineral prospecting. Their core objective is to obtain complete, uncontaminated core samples, while also addressing the drilling challenges of hard rock and complex strata. Neglecting details during use can easily lead to core breakage, borehole deviation, or even equipment overload damage. The following key precautions must be strictly followed.

1. Pre-construction: Precise Preparation, Adapting to Formation and Core Requirements

Formation Adaptation: Determine the formation hardness based on the geological report (e.g., shale, granite, fractured zones) and select the corresponding core drill bit (diamond bits are suitable for hard rock, alloy bits for soft rock) to avoid excessively rapid drill bit wear.

Equipment Calibration: Check the drilling rig's positioning accuracy (horizontal error ≤ 0.5°), drill rod verticality, and calibrate the depth measuring device to ensure accurate core depth data.

Material Preparation: Prepare core tubes, core boxes, and mud wall protection materials (required for fractured strata) to avoid work interruptions due to material shortages.

2. During Drilling: Strictly Control Parameters to Protect Core Integrity

Drill Pressure and Rotation Speed: For hard rock formations (granite, limestone), control drill pressure at 10-15 kN and rotation speed at 80-120 r/min; for soft rock formations, control drill pressure at 5-8 kN and rotation speed at 150-200 r/min, avoiding high pressure and high speed that could cause core breakage.

Drilling Rhythm: Stop drilling every 5-10 meters to clean the borehole and remove cuttings (to prevent stuck drill). In fractured zones, slow down the drilling speed and increase the mud flow rate (30-50 L/min) to prevent borehole collapse.

Avoid Blindly Applying Pressure: If stuck in hard rock, do not forcefully lift or apply pressure. Instead, rotate the drill pipe in the opposite direction, inject high-pressure mud for lubrication, and gradually free the drill pipe to prevent breakage or deformation of the core tube.

3. Core Sampling and Sample Protection: Avoiding Contamination and Damage

Core Sampling Operation: Raise the core tube slowly and evenly (speed ≤ 0.5m/min) to avoid violent vibrations that could cause the core to fall out. After removing the core, immediately rinse the surface mud with clean water; do not use hard objects to strike or clean it.

Sample Preservation: Arrange the cores in order of drilling depth, label them with depth and formation name, and place them in a sealed core box. Avoid direct sunlight or rain immersion to prevent weathering and contamination.

4. Equipment Maintenance: Focus on Wear-Resistant Components and Power System

Drill Tool Maintenance: After operation, disassemble the core tube and drill bit, check for wear (replace drill bit with cutting edge wear exceeding 2mm), clean, and apply rust-preventive oil to prevent corrosion.

Power and Hydraulic System: Regularly check the engine oil and hydraulic oil levels to ensure the cooling system is unobstructed (hard rock drilling generates a lot of heat; poor cooling can easily cause shutdown); never exceed the rated pressure of the hydraulic system (usually 25-30MPa).

5. Safety Precautions: Beware of High Voltage and Field Risks

Equipment Safety: Keep away from rotating parts of the drilling rig (drill rod, core tube) during operation. Never touch drilling tools while wearing gloves to prevent injury from entanglement.

Field Protection: Secure the drilling rig's footing (using anchors or counterweights) in mountainous or sloping areas to prevent landslides and overturning. Stop operations during thunderstorms, disconnect the power supply, and prevent lightning strikes.

The core principle of core drilling rig operation is "precise adaptation + gentle pressure and slow drilling + careful protection." It's crucial to ensure the scientific accuracy of core samples while prioritizing equipment and personnel safety. Beginners are advised to practice under the guidance of professionals, recording operating parameters for different geological formations to gradually accumulate experience and avoid data distortion or equipment malfunction due to improper operation.
